The Board

Professor Lord (Alec) Broers FREng FRS Kt DL is the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and was President of Royal Academy of Engineering from 2001 to 2006. Having been knighted in 1998 and made a Life Peer in 2004, Lord Broers has been Chairman of the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee (2004-2007) and is also chairman of the board of directors of the Diamond Light Source, which is the UK’s largest new science facility to be commissioned in the last 30 years.

David Sarphie is a biotechnology entrepreneur with over 13 years experience in project management, senior management and CEO positions within start-up drug-delivery, diagnostics and medical device companies.

Gabriel Aeppli is the Quain Professor of Physics and Director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology. Prior to taking up these posts in the autumn of 2002, he was a Senior Research Scientist for NEC(Princeton), a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories, a Research Assistant at MIT, and an industrial co-op student at IBM.

Tony Cass is currently Professor of Chemical Biology, in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Professor Patrick Maxwell was appointed Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Medicine at University College London in March 2008. He was previously Professor of Nephrology at Imperial College London.

Professor John Wood CBE, FREng graduated from Sheffield University in metallurgy and went to Cambridge University for his Ph.D. (Darwin College) where he subsequently stayed on as Goldsmith’s Research Fellow at Churchill College. In 1994 he was awarded a higher doctorate from Sheffield and has an honorary doctorate from the University of Cluj-Napoca in Romania where he is also a “citizen of honour”. He has held academic posts at the Open University followed by Nottingham University where he was Dean of Engineering.
