Rachel McKendry is Reader in Biomedical Nanoscience at the London Centre for Nanotechnology & Division of Medicine, University College London and is internationally recognized for her application of the tools of nanotechnology to probe chemical and biomolecular interactions. Rachel has been a Girton College Cambridge Research Fellow, Dorothy Hodgkin Royal Society Research Fellow & Researcher at IBM Rushlikon. Her research is at the forefront of this rapidly advancing, interdisciplinary field and has resulted in a series of high profile publications in the journals Nature, Nature Nanotechnology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA and Journal of the American Chemical Society. This has led to the successful commercial exploitation of label-free nanosensing technology for genomic disease diagnostics with Roche and antibiotic drug screening applications with Targanta Therapeutics. Rachel is also on the Editorial Board of the Royal Society of Chemistry Journal Analyst and the London Technology Network ‘Emerging Medical Technologies’ Advisory Board. Rachel is now leading a £2m EPSRC Grand Challenge grant to develop cantilever sensors for HIV and has recently been awarded the IOP Patterson Medal (2009).
