Bio Nano Consulting has one full-time Scientist role in Electrochemical Sensors available. Acting as part of the Bio Nano Consulting product development team the post-holder will join a highly motivated group working to develop an innovative and award-winning enzyme biosensor for measuring arsenic contamination levels in drinking water.

The successful applicant will have a strong background in bio-/chemical-sensors with experience in electrochemical sensors. Industrial research and development experience or conducting translational academic research would be beneficial. Additionally, the successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will have an ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

The role requires use of the candidate’s own initiative to ensure that all projects are delivered on time, within the scope and in required quality. Confidence in working in a busy, business-focussed environment with highly-skilled and motivated individuals, coupled with the ability to handle pressure on occasions is essential. The appointment will start as soon as possible and is subject to receipt of satisfactory references.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Laboratory-based position requiring the fabrication, characterisation and optimisation of electrochemical and optical sensors
  • Undertake experimental work as planned with the project manager and team leader
  • Sensor data collection and data analysis relevant to the project
  • Ensuring the validity and reliability of data at all times
  • Maintaining accurate and compelete records of all findings
  • Compile and present scientific results to board of directors and investors
  • Report to team leader
  • Failitate planning and execution of national and international field trials and attend project progress meeting
  • Facilitate in the design of SOP’s, protocols and and quality control documents
  • Facilitate in the discussions with external vendors and subcontractors
  • Review of relevant literature
  • Facilitate in the development of electronic instrumentation to interface sensors
  • Use of existing electronic and optical spectroscopy instrumentation and custom software for sensor characterisation and measurement
  • Prepare progress reports on sensor development as required
  • Ensure undertaken laboratory work is in accordance with the company’s health and safety policy
  • Carry out any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by Bio Nano Consulting


 PhD in Electrochemistry or equivalent experience


Knowledge / Experience

  • A laboratory-based research project which demonstrated competency of relevant laboratory skills is essential
  • Ideally applicants will have experience in electrochemical sensors
  • Ideally applicants will have experience in sensor design, fabrication, and characterisation
  • Experience in enzyme biosensors will be beneficial but not essential
  • Experience in optical sensors will be beneficial but not essential
  • Knowledge of use of sensor electronic instrumentation (e.g. potentiostat, spectrum analyser)
  • Knowledge of data processing and modelling software e.g. Matlab, Python
  • Ability to conduct a comprehensive but succinct review of recent literature
  • Ability to apply knowledge and experience, described above, to generate relevant experimental data

Salary & Benefits

The salary will be commensurate with experience. We also offer a stakeholder pension scheme and 22 days paid annual leave. Normal place of work will be at Bio Nano Consulting’s Laboratories at Rothamsted Open Innovation Hub, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 2JQ.
