Bio Nano Consulting (BNC), London-based technology solution-providers and strategic consultants working in a range of high-technology sectors, is pleased to announce that it has agreed a joint research collaboration with Arup, one of the world’s leading engineering consultancies, to develop an engineering methodology for the design and deployment of water re-use networks. The project will be funded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) under its Water Security Collaborative Research and Development Competition.

In the developed world, water is typically provided at drinking water quality regardless of its use.  The UK’s water industry is quite rightly proud of its consistent record in delivering a high quality product. However, much of the water we use in our homes, commerce and industry does not need to be drinking quality. At a local level, there are opportunities to create water re-use networks to capture and treat used water and to deliver as treated recycled water for purposes that do not require drinking water quality, including irrigation, WC flushing, industrial processes and washdown.

Arup has been at the forefront of innovative water projects for years and this collaboration with BNC, combined with the TSB funding, will lead to the development of a much needed and robust water re-use network methodology.

This project will extend previous work undertaken by Arup and University College London (UCL) to develop a novel methodology for the deployment of water re-use networks in both the developed and developing world. ‘The purpose of the work is to create a robust water re-use network methodology which will enhance water security whilst minimising the carbon requirements to provide recycled water’ says Martin Shouler, Associate Director at Arup and leader of the project from Arup’s side.

Commenting on the collaboration with Arup which will extend BNC’s stated objective of addressing environmental issues particularly in the area of water strategy, BNC CEO Dr David Sarphie said, “We are delighted to have agreed a collaboration in such an important area with a company as eminent and strong in engineering as Arup. This innovative project strengthens BNC’s portfolio of water-related projects and reconfirms our important role in establishing and managing research projects that can have a positive impact on the environment.”
